Models of a National Circus Centre for Norway

What would the 'Perfect Circus Center' for Norway look like? Would it be a new space or an existing space? Would it be one space or many spaces? In the nature or in the city centre?

This report is produced by Cirkus Xanti and supported by Arts Council Norway and Oslo City Cultural Council. The report, written and edited by Sverre Waage and Nick Verginis, with a contribution by Jean-Michel Guy, presents the current state of circus as a performing art in Norway and discusses the necessary steps that would need to be taken, towards a complete Circus Centre. This would include a training space, a creation space, a presentation space, and a residency-research space.

In the report, the writers look at the background and history of circus in Norway, as well as various options to be taken into consideration, depending on the decision-making and the possibilities. This means that a circus centre could be created on short, medium, and long-term with different measures to be taken for each case, also taking into account the specific characteristics of Norway as a country and a state. Adding to that, international examples of recently built and established circus centres are included, to underline how in each case, the best case scenario for them was selected.

The report hopes to contribute to the advocacy of the circus sector in general, and to be a kickstarter for further improvements, in Norway and abroad, in the establishment of the circus arts as a recognized performing art with an important place in society.
